Prayer

Here are a few of my favourite prayers. You will note many come from the 14th and 15th Centuries as I really love prayers which are part of our Christian heritage.

Prayers of  Desiderius Erasmus (1466 - 1536)

God of love, the true sun of the world, eternally risen and never going down; in your mercy shine into our hearts, that the night of sin and the mists of error being banished, we may, this day and all our life, walk without stumbling along the way which you have set before us. Amen

O Lord Jesus Christ,
you have said that you are the way, the truth, and the life.
Suffer us not to stray from you
     who are the way,
nor to distrust you
     who are the truth,
nor to rest in anything other than you,
who are the life.” (Based on John 14)

Prayers of St Teresa of Avila (1515-1582)

Christ has no body now, but yours.
No hands, no feet on earth, but yours.
Yours are the eyes through which he looks
With compassion on this world.
Let nothing disturb you.
Let nothing frighten you.
All things pass away:
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things.
Those who have God
Find they lack nothing;
God alone suffices

Ven Heath OFM Tyburn Martyr (1599–1643)
Let the door of your heart always be open to him, observe his entrace, embrace his presence, hearken diligently to his voice, implore his assistance and earnestly desire him never to forsake you.

St Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430)

Breathe into me, Holy Spirit,
That my thoughts may all be holy.

Move in me, Holy Spirit,
That my work, too, may be holy.

Attract my heart, Holy Spirit,
That I may love only what is holy.

Strengthen me, Holy Spirit,
That I may defend all that is holy.

Protect me, Holy Spirit,
That I may always be holy

The Venerable Bede AD 673-735

O Christ, our Morning Star,
Splendour of Light Eternal,
shining with the glory of the rainbow,
come and waken us
from the greyness of our apathy,
and renew in us your gift of hope.
 Amen
